A free sample tin of Nixey’s Waterproof Boot Polish dating from the early 1920’s

Fascinating Finds

In early November 2019, I received a message from Joanna Waller of Whitstable, Kent who told me that her husband Winston had discovered a very small tin of Nixey’s Boot Polish while doing some work on their house. They not only sent me a photograph of the tin (above), but they asked for my address so they could send me the tin itself! I’m eternally grateful to them for their kindness and generosity! Here’s what they had to say:

While lifting floorboards in a bedroom to do some wiring, we found this Nixey's boot polish tin, a tiny free sample container, with a few crumbs of polish still inside. We have no idea how long it's been there. We are only the 3rd owners of our house which was built in 1922, and many original features are still in place, including some bedroom fireplaces, and original woodwork in built-in cupboards. We were fascinated to discover the blacklead website, with all the history of ordinary domestic life and business in the 19th century and onwards.

Several years ago, I found the two items below on the eBay website. Needless to say, I won the auctions!:
